In 1989, at the peak of Japan’s economic miracle and with the world’s eyes set on the upcoming Olympics, a Japanese studio decided to pay an unprecedented digital tribute to the city of Barcelona. The result was Gaudi: Barcelona no Kaze (Gaudi: Winds of Barcelona), an ambitious graphic adventure that never left Japan.
Today, more than three decades later, a team of preservationists and translators has achieved what seemed impossible: reverse-engineering the original code so that, for the first time in history, this software gem is 100% playable for audiences outside of Japan.
Set in Barcelona in 1992, Gaudi Winds of Barcelona takes place during the month of the Olympics and features real streets, neighborhoods, and environments interpreted and presented through the quirky and affectionate eyes of the original Japanese developers, Wolf Team. Gaudi is a passionate look at Catalan culture with the iconic monuments of famous architect Antoni Gaudí meticulously recreated with stylish, realistic pixel art.
Players take on the role of Henry Howard, a former Scotland Yard detective turned “information consultant,” as he helps to uncover a dangerous terrorist conspiracy that could tear a country apart. This tense tale is filled with suspense, danger, and even a bit of romance as each chapter moves Henry one step closer to the larger-than-life threat that, if achieved, would endanger the entire country of Spain.
Shinyuden took on the herculean task of taking this massive adventure and translating over 27,000 words into English, Spanish, and Catalan with a dedicated team of professional localizers and without the use of machine translation. Everything from text, interfaces, and graphic menus has precisely captured not only the literal meaning of the original text, but also the cultural nuances, the noir tone, and the unique atmosphere that defines this experience.
