On this episode of Hype from Outer Heaven, join Kyle, Brandon, Caleb and Prince as they have a look at the history of videogames that have been given the Hollywood treatment. Having a reputation for being downright awful, its somewhat hard to pinpoint exactly where videogame movies went wrong, as many remember movies such as Super Mario Bros (1993) & Mortal Kombat (1995) with fond nostalgia, only to realise in most cases that we’re looking at them with rose-tinted glasses. With directors such as the infamous: Uwe Boll acting as the catalyst for terrible game-to-movie adaptations (his Alone in the Dark movie is regarded by many as one of the worst movies ever made) it’s no surprise that the medium has been cursed to mediocrity. However, there is a whiff of change in the air following the release of HBO’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Naughty Dog’s: The Last of Us and more recently with Amazon’s live-action Fallout series; could the longer-viewing format of a TV show save video game adaptations where Film could not?
